Once a pond is up and running, the urge to rush out and buy some fish seems irresistible. However, buying livestock with no forethought can result in a high mortality rate. Fish are not conventional "pets", but this does not mean that owners have any less responsibility for their well being. Care does not just mean providing food and breeding partners; it also involves maintaining the fishes' health and protecting them from predators (including other fish). Taking a broader view, you should also be alive to their potential effect on local fauna and flora.
