Water Quality

Water Hardenss, pH, Ammonia levels etc

Anyone wanting to be successful at the tropical fish hobby must put forth the time necessary to understand some basic fish tank water chemistry. This will help your fish to not only survive but thrive!

I recommend that you get a good aquarium water testing kit or many individual kits. You will need kits that will test for the following:

    * Ammonia
    * Nitrite
    * Nitrate
    * pH
    * Water Hardness
    * Chlorine / Chloramine

Ammonia/Nitrites/Nitrates
The Nitrogen Cycle, ammonia turning from nitrates
Carbonate Hardness (KH)
Levels of calcium and maagnesium in the water
Chlorine and Chloramine
Levels of chlorine and chloramine from local tap water can be damaging to your pond life
General Hardness (GH)
The chemical hardness of the water in the pond
Oxygen (O2)
Levels of dissolved oxygen in the water
pH
The acidity and alkilinity levels in the water
Phosphate
The levels of phosphate in your pond

Checking that there is no build up of silt in your pond
Temperature
Water temperature thats ideal for each different type of fish
