Alpines

Antennaria dioica

This useful carpeting plant has tufts of grey leaves. The leaves are covered with white hairs on the underside.
In the summer small fluffy, rose-pink flowers are produced.

Cultivation: Grow in full sun.

Height: 5cm (2in);spread: 45cm (18in).

Sedum acre

Common stonecrop, biting stonecrop this evergreen, mat-forming, hardy perennial has dense, spreading shoots covered in minute, fleshy, triangular, pale green leaves and flat-topped heads of tiny, star shaped yellow-green flowers.

Cultivation: Grow in full sun.

Height:5cm (2in); spread:60cm(2ft) or more.

Arenaria (Caryophyllaceae)

Sandwort

This is a genus of about 160 species of annuals and low-growing perennials, some of which are evergreen, from northern regions of the northern hemisphere. They hug the ground and make excellent plants for screes and rock crevices, where they soon spread over the rock faces.

Propagation: By seed.

Hardiness: Hardy.

Aurinia (brassicaceae)

This genus comprises seven species of clump-forming biennials or evergreens from Europe, Russia and Turkey, where they grow in rocky, mountainous areas. They are robust growing plants, frequently used to clothe dry walls and large rock banks.

Propagation: By seed or by softwood cuttings.

Hardiness: Hardy.
