If your pond is to be dug out rather than raised, consider what you are going to to with the excavated material (spoil). Can you build up a bank, or should you take the spoil away, which can be expensive and difficult? If you are removing good topsoil, look at possible uses elsewhere to add the quality of the soil, or to level another section of you property. It is easy to underestimate the amount that you will have to take away - often it bulks up and becomes up to a third more in volume that when it was in the ground.
