When a pond has had a year to develop, it can support a small number of fish without upsetting the delicate ecological balance. If, however, you want to keep considerable number of ornamental fish, you will need to fit filtration and cleaning facilities.

These vary in size and type, but be aware that some filtration units can take up an area of up to half the surface area of the pond. Power supplies are required and special pipework needs to be built into the pond; protection for plants must also be installed.
