Free-Floating Plant

Azolla (Azollaceae)

Mosquito fern, water fern, fairy moss

The genus contains eight species of dainty, green, floating plants. They quickly reproduce by division, and their rapid rate of reproduction means they shouild be nettled off a small pond as soon as they swamp the surface.

Hardiness: Half hardy to frost tender.

Lemna (Lemnaceae)

Duckweed, frog's buttons

The genus contains 13 species of small, temperate and tropical floating plants found in almost all parts of the world. They form green floating mats in still or slow moving water. The flowers are small and have no decorative merit.
