For every hard ground you will need a spade with a narrow cutting edge but if the soil is friable you may approach with a shovel. Most hardware stores carry a good range. Generally metal tools are less expensive and more durable than wood or plastic handled tools. Gently does it if you are not in the habit of digging. A sturdy wheelbarrow is an essential tool that will make lifting and carrying easier.
