Marking the Shape
When you have worked out all the possible location for your pond, mark them out using rope or a garden hose, or even spray paint. Marking out the pond shape and viewing it from all aspects allows you to be sure that the end shape (which is difficult and expensive to change) is exactly what you expected.
Should any trees be reshaped, reduced or removed? are there any natural dips or gullies that could be made to hold water, or any slopes from which water could run from fountain to pond?
