Moisture-Lovers

These plants are usually planted in soil that is not saturated at the edges of the pool. For this reason, they are treated in the same way as other herbaceous plants. Moisture-loving plants are frequently planted in soil conditions which will be compacted if you are working in one area for any length of time and it is useful to work from temporary planks or permanent stepping stones, such as partially buried railway sleepers (ties), for access to the planting bed.

Planting A Moisture-Lover

When planting moisture-loving plants, remember to leave enough room for larger plants such as Gunnera and Rheum.

  1. Dig out a hole that is large enough to accommodate the roots.

  2. Plant the young plant in the hole to the same depth as it had been planted before.

  3. Spread out the roots in the planting hole and take care not to plant too deeply.

  4. Cover the roots with the damp soil surrounding the plant in the bed and firm gently.

  5. Water in the plant with a fine rose on a watering can.
