Trees and Shade

On the whole, tees are not good companions for ponds. If you have a large pond you will probably get away with one or even two trees if they do not cast too much shadow (in the northern hemisphere, this means they should be on the north side of the pond). A pond that is surrounded by trees so that sunlight cannot penetrate to the water is likely to be dead pond because the underwater plants that supply vital oxygen need sunlight to function. If you want a successful pond, you will have to remove some of the trees to allow in some sunlight.
