Abies (pinaceae)

Silver Fir

The genus contains about 50 species of evergreen conifers from Europe, North Africa , Asia and North America. Unlike spruces, which have pendulous cones, those of fir trees are erect. There is a wide range of sizes and shapes, but those described here are ideal for a rocky bank near water.

Propagation: By seed.

Hardiness: Hardy.

Abies Cephalonica

“Meyer’s Dwarf”

This low, spreading mounded conifer has short leaves, 9mm-1cm (1/8-1/2in) long, which are arranged radially around the shoots.

Cultivation: Grow in full sun

Height: 50 cm (20in); spread: 1-3m (3-10ft) in time. 

Chamaecyparis obtusa

“Nana Gracilis”

This attractive conifer will take many years to reach the dimensions noted below. It has a very dense, pyramidal habit with rich green foliage, which has a slightly curly appearance

Cultivation: Grow in full sun

Height: 3m(10ft); spread: 1.2m (4ft)

Andromeda (Ericaceae)

The two species in this genus are low-growing, wiry-stemmed evergreen shrubs, found in acid peat bogs in cooler regions of the northern hemisphere. Ideal for a shady streamside.

Propagation: By softwood cuttings in midsummer

Hardiness: Hardy.
