The genus contains about 50 species of evergreen conifers from Europe, North Africa , Asia and North America. Unlike spruces, which have pendulous cones, those of fir trees are erect. There is a wide range of sizes and shapes, but those described here are ideal for a rocky bank near water.

The two species in this genus are low-growing, wiry-stemmed evergreen shrubs, found in acid peat bogs in cooler regions of the northern hemisphere. Ideal for a shady streamside.
